This photo essay focuses on homeless camp evictions in Columbia, Mo. I worked on this story in collaboration with Columbia Missourian reporter Hope Davis. We were first introduced to one of the main subjects of the story,Bill Tolson, through an outreach worker at a local non-profit. Tolson and the 20 others who live at his campsite were facing eviction from land they were living on. We decided to pursue a story about the challenges that many people living on the streets face when they are forced out of their camps and lose their possessions. On February 26, 2022, we were contacted by an outreach worker that there was an active camp sweep happening in Columbia. When we arrived on site, we met Randy W. and the other residents who lived at the camp. We spent the day documenting the residents collecting their belongings and moving to a new location. The final story was published on March 8, 2022, by the Columbia Missourian.
