Bill Tolson is homeless and on the verge of being evicted from his encampment. Tolson lives with 20 others in a wooded area just south of a popular mall in Columbia, Mo. Like many individuals experiencing homelessness, Tolson is living on private land and has no rights to where he lives. For now, he is safe but that won’t last. Across town camp clearances are already under way. On Feb. 26, 2022, Randy W. and his neighbors awoke to a devastating message. Leave the land by sundown or face arrest. Residents packed their belongings, left behind what they couldn’t carry, and ventured off into the cold Missouri winter looking for a new place to call home.
